Reading, history and present-day details

We would like some details of Reading. Where did the name, Reading, come from? When did the first settlers start developing Reading. What of the past still remains?

A general overview works well. Our magazine submissions can be used for specifics, such as important buildings and places in the area, as well as prominent people, and such like. Oh, and of course, the local gossip!
